Developments of Narendra Dabholkar murder case

The Mumbai HC has said to take instant action and not depend on independent investigation of Gauri Lankesh. Further out of the three accused arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation Rohit Rege has received bail after CBI fails to file charge-sheet.

The case started back in August of 2013, when Dr.Dabholkar out on a morning walk was shot down by two unidentified gunmen near Omkareshwar temple, Pune at 7:20 AM IST.  The police had stated that it was under suspicion that it was a planned murder because the assailants were aware Dabholkar stay in Pune. Later a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by activist Ketan Tirodkar, urging the case to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) instead of the state police, over lack of faith over the latter.

On 17 January 2014, during his visit to Pune, the then Home Minister R. R. Patil gave Pune police a week to make some progress or hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On 18 August 2018, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested one of the two gunmen who allegedly killed Narendra Dabholkar in 2013. Sachin Prakasrao Andure, who is believed to be one of the shooters who shot dead the MANS founder in Pune.

The Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had announced a reward of 1 million (US$14,000) to any person with information of the assailants. Furthermore, political parties called for a bandh (strike) in Pune on 21 August, and various institutions across Pune remained closed to protest Dabholkar's assassination.
