PM Narendra Modi urges voters to ensure highest turnout in poll history; Tags Film Industry leaders, Sports personalities, others on Twitter
PM Modi has
urged many personalities from various industries asking them to encourage
citizens to exercise their voting right in the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha
elections. Personalities from politicians, sports, Bollywood celebrities and
top business leaders were asked in a series of tweets by the PM to encourage
increased voter participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Personalities
like Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Amitabh
Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar were
approached personally by the PM on twitter. He has also
approached several media personalities and institutions, including Vineet Jain,
Sanjay Gupta, Aroon Purie, and Press Trust of India and ANI news agencies, he
said the media plays a vital role in a democracy and has a strong influence on
people's minds.
Apart from
twitter PM Modi also used his personal Blog to encourage people to vote. He shared a link
where people can register as voters. Stating to the fact that the 2019 elections
are special because for the first time those born in the 21st
century will be able to cast their votes. "I hope all eligible youngsters who have
not registered to vote will do so and enrich our democracy by voting," he said.
Retweeting his
tweets many personalities from different industries asked their followers
specially the youngsters to vote. Film stars like Akshay Kumar, Alia Bhatt etc. went a step
further and also shared the link for the website where people could register
themselves as voters. Many top business leaders have even started offline campaigns to
raise awareness on the importance of voting and get as many as possible people
to sign up as voters.
All this has led
to a huge increase in the numbers of voter across the country. In a statistical
data shared by the government it was said that in just 3 days of the PM’s tweet
more than 2Lakh new voters joined and about 1.5lakh of them
were youngsters.
The prime
minister said not voting should create "anguish" amongst
people who do not turn up at polling stations. "Would you
want a situation where something happens in the country that you disapprove of
and you are forced to think - because I did not go vote that day, this unfortunate situation has
arisen and the nation is suffering," PM Modi wrote on his blog. He further added
that voting is among a citizen's prime duties. "A vote
signifies the willingness to contribute to the development trajectory of the
nation. By voting, people connect themselves with the country's dreams and
aspirations," he wrote.
A few of his
tweets where he had apporched leaders in film industry were ‘Urging
@SrBachchan, @iamsrk and @karanjohar to creatively ensure high voter awareness
and participation in the coming elections. Because .it’s all about
loving your democracy (and strengthening it). :)’ and ‘Dear @BeingSalmanKhan and @aamir_khan, It is time to inspire
and motivate youth in your own Andaz to vote so that we can strengthen Apna
Democracy & Apna country.’
The upcoming Lok
Sabha election shall be held between April 11 and May 19 for 543 seats. The counting of
votes and final results of the elections shall be announced on May 23, 2019. “Spare yourself
from that regret and go vote,” advised Modi.
