District’s 1.25 Lakh Families Become Smoke Free

Amravati, 3rd January 2019: “Under the scheme of the Central government, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 1.25Lakh families in the Amravati district have received LPG Cylinders, as of 31st December 2018,” said Mr. Yaglesh Jharvadekar, Amravti division head of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, at a press conference which was held to inform and urge the people of Amravati to join this scheme.

As per Mr. Jharvadekar, at least 5Cr. women, who have the BPL card, shall receive an LPG cylinder by March 2019 and another 3Cr. LPG cylinder are to be distributed, by 2020, for which the government has invested Rs. 12,800Cr.  

He advised the people of Amravati who want to be included in this scheme to inform the Nodal office of the District, Mr. Sumit Devgade. He also said that those who shall use this scheme shall also be given subsidy on the tax of the LPG cylinder.

He further said that people under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, such as the Scheduled Cast, Scheduled Tribe and Nomadic Tribes, are eligible for the Ujjwala Yojana scheme. Furthermore, if any family is not able to deposit a down payment for their cylinder an EMI scheme is available for them under the scheme. 

He proudly announced that in May 2016, when the scheme was launched, there was only 62% coverage of LPG cylinder. This has now increased to 80% coverage as per records of 2018. Under this scheme 1.25Lakh LPG connections have been distributed. 

A 5Kg cylinder has also been introduced for families, with earning below the poverty line, who cannot afford a 14Kg cylinder. The committee has urged the public, who have not yet joined the scheme, to come forward as soon as possible and use the benefits of the scheme.

Gullargaht Rehab: A move in the opposite direction!

Gullarghat, a location once said to house more than 150 families, has now become a land ruled by tigers of Melghat . Gopi Nanda, the only tribal still staying in the location, said, “We were shown many locations to rehabilitate at. After a lot of deliberations our elders of the village decided to move from this location.” He said that out of the 150n families in the village about 30 were not interested in moving but due to the majority wanting to move out they were left with no other option. Another issue, pointed out by Nanda, was that the amount that was settled by the government for the rehabilitated villagers was never given completely to them. He said that due to the huge amount of Rs. 10lakh which many villagers thought would be enough to help them sustain the villagers accepted the program and moved out of Gullarghat.
